A great headboard transforms a bedroom more than almost any other single piece. Unfortunately, a great manufactured headboard often costs $400-800. The fix: build your own. None of these projects require carpentry experience and most cost under $80 in materials.

I've built four headboards across three apartments. Here are the styles that consistently look the best and last the longest.

1. Upholstered fabric panel (no tools)

Wrap a piece of foam-padded plywood in linen or velvet fabric, staple to the back, and lean against the wall. No drilling required — perfect for rentals.

Get a piece of plywood cut at the hardware store, wrap with 2-inch foam from a craft store, then a layer of batting, then fabric pulled tight and stapled to the back. Total cost: about $60 for a king-size.

2. Wood plank wall headboard

Attach reclaimed wood planks (or new tongue-and-groove pine) directly to the wall behind the bed. Creates the look of a built-in headboard for the cost of a few boards.

Stagger the plank lengths for a more organic look. Stain or whitewash before installing.

3. Curtain rod + tapestry

The ultimate rental-friendly headboard. Mount a long curtain rod above the bed and hang a tapestry, a vintage rug, or a large piece of fabric. Removable in 10 minutes.

Look for vintage rugs at estate sales or kilim tapestries on Etsy.

4. Painted headboard shape

Paint a headboard shape directly onto the wall using painter's tape and a quart of paint. Arched, square, or scalloped shapes all work.

This is genuinely beautiful and costs $25. The shape is permanent (well, until you repaint), so commit to a style you love.

5. Reclaimed door headboard

Find an old interior door at a salvage yard. Mount it horizontally behind the bed. The trim and panels of the old door read as immediate vintage character.

Sand and seal but don't repaint — the patina is the point.

6. Slatted wood headboard

Modern, Scandinavian-style headboards made from vertical wood slats are everywhere right now. Build your own with 1x2 pine boards attached to two horizontal back rails.

Stain in a warm walnut for instant Scandi-modern energy. Total cost under $50.

Sizing your headboard

For king beds, aim for 78-80 inches wide. Queens, 64-66 inches. The headboard should extend slightly beyond the mattress on each side — about an inch — but never less wide than the bed itself.

Height is more flexible: 36-50 inches above the mattress reads as balanced for most ceiling heights.

Mounting safely

Heavy headboards (real wood, padded panels) should be either bolted to the wall studs or attached directly to the bed frame. A leaning headboard works fine for lightweight panels but will tip with a heavy one.

Always test by pushing firmly before declaring it installed.

A DIY headboard is the single biggest impact-per-dollar bedroom project there is. It transforms the room overnight, takes one weekend, and saves hundreds compared to retail. Pick the style that fits your home and skill level — and just start.

"Upholstered panels are the easiest no-tool option."
